The United Kingdom has officially recorded its hottest June day on record, surpassing a long-standing record that had stood since 1976.

According to the UK’s meteorological service, a temperature of 35.7°C was recorded in Charlwood on Wednesday.

The milestone comes exactly 50 years after the historic 1976 heatwave, one of the most severe in British history. During that summer, many residents covered windows with foil to block out the sun, while water shortages forced authorities to introduce emergency measures and restrictions on water use.

Despite today’s record, it remains below the highest temperature ever recorded in the United Kingdom, which was 40.3°C, registered during the extreme heatwave of July 2022.

The latest temperatures highlight the growing frequency and intensity of heatwaves across Europe, as climate experts continue to warn about the increasing impact of global warming on weather patterns.
