Germany plans to close its military camp near Erbil International Airport in northern Iraq by the end of September and withdraw the majority of its troops stationed there, according to German magazine Der Spiegel.
The report states that Germany’s Ministry of Defence has informed the relevant parliamentary committees about the decision to shut down the camp.
The military base has faced ongoing security threats in recent months, with the situation deteriorating following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Although German forces were not directly targeted by Iranian missile and drone attacks, their proximity to U.S. military units forced troops to spend several nights in bunkers as a precaution.
Defence Ministry spokesperson Christiane Noack confirmed that parliament had been informed but declined to provide further details about the timeline or logistics of the withdrawal, citing operational security.
“This will be a matter of detailed planning; it is not a rushed withdrawal,” Noack told a press conference in Berlin.
She added that every military mission includes an exit strategy and that the next steps are being coordinated closely with international partners.
According to the German Ministry of Defence, a smaller team of military advisers will remain in the region.
