Political scientist and Southeast Europe analyst Jasmin Mujanović has reacted to the discovery of two new mass graves dating back to the Kosovo war, saying the findings serve as a stark reminder of the atrocities committed under the regime of Slobodan Milošević.
In a post on X, Mujanović said the discovery of the graves, believed to contain the remains of around two dozen Kosovo Albanian victims, underscores how recent—and largely unresolved—the legacy of Belgrade’s violent campaigns in the Balkans during the 1990s remains.
“The discovery of two new mass graves from the Kosovo War, containing approximately two dozen Kosovo Albanian victims of the Milošević regime, is a reminder of how recent and how unresolved the regional consequences of Belgrade’s murderous campaign in the 1990s remain,” Mujanović wrote.
He added that thousands of victims are still missing and argued that many of the political structures and governing norms established during the Milošević era have yet to be fundamentally reformed across the region.
“Miles of victims remain unaccounted for, the political structures and norms established by Milošević throughout the region remain unreformed, and the international community continues to be consumed by its limited efforts to ignore these issues,” he stated.
The discovery of the new mass graves has renewed attention to the unresolved issue of missing persons from the Kosovo war, as forensic teams continue excavation and identification efforts. The findings have also intensified calls for accountability and greater regional cooperation in addressing wartime crimes and locating those who remain missing.
