United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the latest wave of missile and drone attacks targeting Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, saying they have caused significant civilian casualties and extensive damage to civilian infrastructure.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Guterres also expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict, noting that the fighting is increasingly spreading into the territory of the Russian Federation. He likewise condemned Ukraine’s recent drone strikes on various locations inside Russia, which reports indicate have resulted in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure.
According to the statement, the latest developments are part of an alarming pattern of intensified attacks on populated areas, leading to a record number of civilian casualties and widespread destruction in both Ukraine and, increasingly, Russia.
“Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are a clear violation of international humanitarian law and must stop immediately,” the statement said.
Guterres also raised concerns about growing threats to maritime security in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, warning that the situation could have serious implications for global food security.
He called on all parties to ensure freedom of navigation in accordance with international law and to protect civilian ports and maritime infrastructure.
The UN Secretary-General concluded by reiterating his call for an urgent de-escalation and the establishment of a full, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire as a step toward a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace, in line with the UN Charter and international law.
