A lawmaker from the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), Time Kadrijaj, says an extraordinary session of the Kosovo Assembly will be held on Friday evening, as the constitutional deadline for the legislature’s formation expires.
Kadrijaj told KosovaPress in a written response that the necessary signatures have been secured and that lawmakers will remain inside the Assembly chamber in an effort to continue the process.
“We have secured the necessary signatures. We will remain in the chamber,” Kadrijaj said.
The development comes on the final day of the 30-day deadline set by the Constitutional Court for the completion of the constitutive process of the new Assembly.
The constitutive session was suspended on Thursday following a request from Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti, who asked for additional time for consultations with political parties in an effort to reach an agreement over the formation of institutions. Kurti did not nominate a candidate for Assembly speaker, leaving the process unresolved.
So far, the Assembly has not issued an official announcement confirming when the suspended session will resume.
Kadrijaj’s statement suggests that opposition lawmakers and other deputies are seeking to prevent the constitutional deadline from expiring without further action.
Legal experts have warned that failure to constitute the Assembly within the deadline could trigger a serious constitutional and political crisis, although there is disagreement over the precise legal consequences once the deadline passes.
The Constitutional Court had previously ordered that the constitutive process be completed within 30 days. With that deadline expiring at midnight, the failure to reach an agreement could further prolong Kosovo’s institutional deadlock.
The political crisis has already delayed the formation of a new government and could also complicate the process of electing a new president, adding pressure on Kosovo’s political parties to reach an agreement.
If the Assembly fails to complete its constitution within the prescribed timeframe, the issue could ultimately return to the Constitutional Court for clarification of the next constitutional steps.
