Montenegro’s Prime Minister Milojko Spajić has responded to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, saying Montenegro does not want conflict with Serbia but seeks good-neighborly relations alongside a clear European policy.
“We do not want conflict, but good-neighborly relations, as well as a clear European policy that, obviously, Mr. Vučić does not want to understand,” Spajić wrote on the social media platform X.
Spajić also criticized Vučić for what he described as an inappropriate attempt to portray himself as a defender of Russian interests while lecturing other countries about political principles.
“It is not appropriate for someone in the position held by Vučić to take on the role of Russia’s PR while lecturing others about principles,” Spajić said.
He then posed a direct question to the Serbian president over Belgrade’s reported role in supplying weapons and ammunition to Ukraine while maintaining close political ties with Moscow.
“So one simple question for President Vučić: how is it that Serbia, according to available data, is one of the significant sources of weapons and ammunition for Ukraine, while sending one message to Moscow and another to Europe?” Spajić wrote.
The Montenegrin prime minister said Podgorica’s position was not about having a problem with taking a clear stance, but rather with what he called the application of “double standards.”
The exchange comes amid continued tensions over Serbia’s foreign-policy positioning and Montenegro’s efforts to maintain a firmly pro-European course as it advances toward EU membership.
