President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Oman if the country intervenes in the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions between the United States and Iran remain extremely high.
Trump made the remarks during an interview with Fox News journalist Trey Yingst, warning that Washington would respond forcefully if Oman “gets in our way” over the issue.
“If Oman gets in our way, we will bomb them mercilessly,” Trump said.
The warning comes after Iran held talks with Oman regarding the administration and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important routes for global energy shipments.
The United States and Iran had reached a Memorandum of Understanding in June that established a cessation of hostilities and a 60-day negotiating period aimed at reaching a broader agreement, including issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the 60-day deadline has now expired without a final agreement, increasing uncertainty over the future of the ceasefire and the next phase of confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
Trump’s threat against Oman marks another sharp escalation, potentially widening the confrontation beyond the U.S.-Iran standoff and putting a key regional mediator directly in the line of fire.
