Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Service for Foreigners’ Affairs has confirmed that its information and communications system was targeted in a cyberattack, saying the incident was officially reported to it by the country’s security agencies.

The service said the attack resulted in the theft of user access credentials, which the attacker has allegedly been using for further unauthorized activities and the distribution of stolen information.

An internal investigation has also been launched amid suspicions that some employees may have failed to take necessary measures to protect the information system in a timely manner.

“Regarding the large number of media inquiries concerning the cyberattack on the information and communications system of the Service for Foreigners’ Affairs, we inform the public that we are taking all necessary measures to protect the data of citizens and our employees,” the institution said.

The authorities have not disclosed details about the potential damage caused by the attack or the amount and type of data that may have been compromised.

The Service for Foreigners’ Affairs said it is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident and determine the full extent of the breach.

The institution operates within Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Ministry of Security and is responsible for matters including migration, the residence of foreign nationals and security checks of foreigners entering or staying in the country.
