Four people were killed in a shooting on Sunday evening, August 16, in Isla Cristina, in Spain’s southern province of Huelva, in what authorities suspect may be linked to a long-running conflict between criminal clans.

Among the victims were a 39-year-old pregnant woman, her unborn eight-month-old baby and her 62-year-old mother. A 16-year-old boy was also killed. Preliminary investigators believe the teenager may have had no connection to the conflict.

An 18-year-old man was seriously wounded and remains hospitalized in critical condition, while another man suffered minor injuries.

Masked Gunmen Fled on Motorcycle

According to a preliminary reconstruction by Spain’s Guardia Civil, the shooting took place at around 10 p.m. in the El Rocio neighborhood.

Two masked men reportedly arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on a group of people. After the shooting, the attackers set the motorcycle on fire and abandoned it in a pine-covered area near the Giralda campsite before fleeing.

Investigators have obtained security-camera footage from the campsite. Authorities have also increased security measures throughout the municipality, including around the cemetery where the victims are being mourned.

Possible Clan Retaliation

Huelva’s deputy prefect described the incident as potentially linked to “revenge between clans,” although investigators have not ruled out other motives.

According to the Guardia Civil, the two women killed are believed to have been the mother-in-law and sister of a man with a criminal record known by the nickname “El Baba.”

He is suspected of involvement in another shooting in September 2024 in a neighborhood near Huelva, in which one person was killed and two others were wounded.

Investigators believe that incident may have triggered an armed confrontation between rival clans that has since escalated.

The 18-year-old seriously injured in Sunday’s shooting is reportedly believed to be “El Baba’s” nephew.

Since 2024, the Guardia Civil has carried out a series of searches and arrests in Isla Cristina targeting people suspected of belonging to clans involved in the conflict.

The investigation is being conducted under judicial secrecy. Authorities continue to work to identify and arrest those responsible for the shooting.
