Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the most favorable window for reaching a diplomatic settlement to end the war with Russia could come between late 2026 and the summer of 2027, as Kyiv and its allies continue efforts to find a path toward a ceasefire and lasting peace.
Speaking at a ceremony in Kyiv marking National Flag Day, Zelensky said Ukraine and Russia remain deeply divided on several key issues, particularly Moscow’s demand for the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from parts of the Donbas.
Despite the differences, Zelensky suggested that the period from the end of 2026 through the summer of 2027 could become the most active phase of diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.
One ceasefire option being discussed with the United States and European countries would involve the reciprocal withdrawal of forces and the creation of a buffer “free economic zone” administered by a third party.
Zelensky also said Ukraine was prepared to discuss a mutual halt to attacks targeting energy and agricultural infrastructure as part of efforts to reduce the intensity of the conflict and create conditions for broader negotiations.
The Ukrainian president’s comments come as Kyiv continues to seek security guarantees from its Western partners while Russia and Ukraine remain divided over territory, military positions and the conditions for a potential settlement.
The ceremony in Kyiv was attended by leaders from Nordic and Baltic countries, underscoring the continued political and security support for Ukraine from its European partners.
