United Russia, the ruling party of President Vladimir Putin, has secured 355 seats in the State Duma, according to the nearly final results of Russia’s parliamentary elections.
With more than 95% of the votes counted, the party has received 57.83% of the vote and will control around 80% of the parliament’s 450 seats, giving it a constitutional majority.
The Communist Party received 13.81%, the Liberal Democratic Party 8.98%, and New People 7.96%. The A Just Russia party has also crossed the threshold to enter parliament.
In Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov has been re-elected for a fifth term as the region’s leader. According to the Central Election Commission, he received 99.85% of the vote. Voter turnout across Russia was 59.3%.
Meanwhile, opposition activists based abroad have alleged that the electoral process was manipulated. Russia’s Central Election Commission has described the elections as regular and rejected the allegations.
Meanwhile, Yabloko, the only registered party openly opposing the war in Ukraine, failed to secure seats in the federal parliament. It did, however, surpass the 5% threshold in the Novgorod region and is expected to gain representation in the regional parliament.
