Prishtina | October 2, 2026 — The Kosovo Prosecutorial Council (KPC) has removed Blerim Isufaj from his position as Chief Prosecutor of the Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo, while confirming that he will continue working as a prosecutor within the institution.

The KPC said the decision followed an assessment of relevant “institutional and professional” circumstances.

Prosecutor Dren Paca has been appointed acting Chief Prosecutor of the Special Prosecution until the position is filled through the relevant legal procedures.

In its statement, the KPC said that at its meeting on October 2, 2026, it reviewed the matter within its legal mandate and assessed the relevant institutional and professional circumstances before deciding to remove Isufaj from the position.

The council said the decision was based on Article 22, paragraph 5, of Kosovo’s Law on the Prosecutorial Council, as amended, and on circumstances that it said had been established and documented during the relevant proceedings.

Despite his removal as head of the Special Prosecution, Isufaj will continue to exercise his duties as a prosecutor within the same institution.

The decision prompted reactions from several opposition figures, who characterized the move as an attempt by Prime Minister Albin Kurti to exert control over the Prosecutorial Council as an institution.

Those claims represent the opposition’s characterization of the decision; the KPC cited institutional and professional circumstances and the relevant legal provisions as the basis for its action.
