Serbia’s opposition party SRCE has accused the authorities of increasing pressure on citizens ahead of the elections, claiming that political pressure is being exerted through workplaces, social media and the information people receive on a daily basis.
The party’s committee responsible for defense and internal affairs said the main method, in its view, was pressure on citizens’ livelihoods, alleging that employment and contract extensions are being linked to political loyalty.
“When a person fears for their salary and their job, it is difficult for them to make free decisions,” SRCE said in a statement.
The party also accused the authorities of creating a sense that the election outcome has already been decided by repeatedly portraying the government as unbeatable and suggesting that an individual vote cannot change anything.
“That is the message we hear every day, and if you believe it and stay at home, you have given up your vote before you have even cast it,” SRCE said.
The opposition party also pointed to what it described as voter confusion caused by the appearance of electoral lists whose main activity, according to SRCE, is attacking other opposition groups.
“Instead of citizens hearing what each side is offering, everything is turned into arguments, insults and mutual attacks,” the party said.
SRCE further alleged that institutions, public funds, information and citizens’ fears are being used to influence political behavior and decision-making.
“When these things are repeated day after day, it is easy for a person to get the impression that nothing can be changed. It can,” the party said.
The claims were made by SRCE ahead of the elections and represent the party’s assessment of the political environment.
