Besnik Tahiri, deputy leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), has responded to criticism and international reactions following amendments adopted by the Kosovo Assembly to the law governing the Kosovo Specialist Chambers.

Tahiri said the intervention in the law came as a result of problems that had accumulated during the six-year process, stressing that the aim was not to abolish the Specialist Chambers but to change the way the mechanism was established and implemented.

“What happened in the Kosovo Assembly is very simple. A law was amended as a result of many failures, not only during the six-year process, but also in terms of the aspect and purpose for which it was established,” Tahiri said.

According to him, the Assembly acted within its powers to amend legislation that had itself been adopted by the same institution.

“This restriction does not abolish it, but improves an institution that is intended to deliver justice,” Tahiri said.

He said the amendments are now in force and do not alter Kosovo’s institutional and political orientation.

“The decision is fully in force. Kosovo continues on its path, as do its institutional and political objectives,” he said.
