Serbia’s opposition movement Kreni-Promeni has claimed that police seized two pistols from Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Šapić on the night he allegedly physically assaulted the movement’s city councillor, Tanja Mićić, who sustained serious injuries.

The movement has called on the prosecutor handling the case, Mirko Despotović, to clarify the circumstances surrounding the seizure of the weapons and whether documentation concerning them has been removed from the prosecution’s files.

According to Kreni-Promeni, Šapić had both pistols with him at the time of the incident in which Mićić was injured. The movement has publicly raised several questions about the handling of the case and the measures taken by the authorities.

“Has the confirmation of the seized weapons been removed from the prosecution’s files, and who did it?” the movement asked in its statement.

Kreni-Promeni also questioned why Šapić was reportedly not placed in police custody or subjected to a request for pre-trial detention, despite the allegations that he was armed and had inflicted serious bodily injuries on the councillor.

The movement further asked whether Šapić holds the necessary permits to possess and carry the two firearms, whether he owns additional weapons and whether any other firearms have been seized.

It called on the relevant institutions to clarify the circumstances of the weapons seizure, the status of the related documentation and the reasons for the measures taken—or not taken—against the mayor.

According to medical documentation cited in the report, Mićić suffered fractures to the left nasal bone and the frontal process of the left maxilla, with displacement of bone fragments.

The Third Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade has opened a case concerning the alleged incident. Šapić is reportedly suspected of causing serious bodily injury and violent behaviour. The allegations remain subject to the legal process.

Meanwhile, an extraordinary session of the Belgrade City Assembly is scheduled for October 13, where councillors are due to discuss a proposal to dismiss Šapić as mayor.

The request for the session was submitted by the Kreni-Promeni councillor group with support from other opposition councillors. According to the report, 41 councillors signed the initiative seeking Šapić’s removal from office.
