The European Union has responded to Serbian politician and Interior Minister Ivica Dačić’s provocative declaration that “the Serbian flag will fly over Prizren,” calling on political leaders to act responsibly and contribute to regional stability and the normalisation of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

Dačić made the statement during a public appearance ahead of Serbia’s national elections, triggering strong reactions in Kosovo. His remarks have revived concerns over the rhetoric coming from Serbian officials toward Kosovo’s sovereignty.

EU spokesperson stressed that political leaders must avoid actions and statements that undermine trust and regional stability.

The EU also expressed deep regret that Serbia has yet to take the necessary steps to arrest and prosecute Milan Radoičić, the man accused of leading the September 2023 terrorist attack in Banjska, northern Kosovo.

Brussels said it was particularly concerned by reports that Radoičić attended an election rally organised by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

“The EU has repeatedly called for those responsible for the 2023 attack in Banjska including Milan Radoičić to be held accountable,” the spokesperson said, adding that Serbia had still not taken the necessary steps to arrest and prosecute individuals located on its territory.

The EU urged Belgrade to cooperate fully through established channels of mutual legal assistance, stressing that the matter has remained unresolved for too long and requires immediate action.

The contradiction is stark: while Serbian officials make territorial statements about Kosovo, the EU is still waiting for Serbia to act against a man accused of involvement in an armed attack on Kosovo. Will Brussels finally ensure that calls for accountability lead to concrete action, rather than remain statements of concern?
