U.S. President Donald Trump has sharpened his rhetoric following Brazil’s presidential election, in which incumbent left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won. Trump described the election process today as “disgraceful.”

“These elections are a disgrace to the Brazilian people,” the U.S. president told reporters, also describing the situation as “shameful.”

Defeated conservative candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, who left Brazil and arrived in the United States yesterday, refuses to recognize the election results.

The senator, son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro and an ally of Donald Trump, has denounced what he calls “election manipulation.” He has also stated that he intends to lead the opposition from U.S. territory.

Flávio Bolsonaro, 45, was defeated on Sunday in the second round of voting by left-wing candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The result was considered unexpected, as Bolsonaro had led his rival in the first round.
