Montenegrin journalist Srgjan Kusovac has responded to Montenegro’s Prime Minister, Milojko Spajić, after the latter stated for the second time that Montenegro is the smallest country in the Balkans.

In a post on the social media platform X, Kusovac argued that repeating the statement could no longer be considered a simple slip of the tongue, implying that Kosovo was being overlooked as a state.

“Privately, you can think whatever you want, but as an official of Montenegro, you are obliged to treat the Republic of Kosovo as a state,” Kusovac wrote, addressing the Montenegrin prime minister directly.

Montenegro recognized Kosovo’s independence on October 9, 2008, and established diplomatic relations with Pristina.

Nevertheless, Spajić’s statement prompted a response from the journalist, who stressed that Montenegrin officials must take their country’s official position toward Kosovo into account.

Montenegro covers an area of approximately 13,812 square kilometers, while Kosovo covers around 10,905 square kilometers.
