Tanya Domi, professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in New York, says that the US needs a new diplomatic approach in the dialogue for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, which could include sanctions for non-constructive actors.

In the interview given to Radio Free Europe, the expert on the Balkans says that there has been a disappointment with the foreign policy of the Biden administration, when it comes to Kosovo, despite his historical support for it.

“A new diplomatic initiative that can engage the parties in a way that has not been applied before” is more than necessary, according to Dom.

“I want to say that the continued approach of the EU has been a failure in this dialogue,” she said.

Asked what would be the “new approach” that should be used in the dialogue, she added:

“I think the sanctions policy should be part of the new initiative. So far there has only been water that has flowed – they have managed, but they have not initiated. And the opportunity to review this and engage with a different approach would have to be a huge undertaking,” she stated.
