Kosovo’s Security Council has approved additional measures to strengthen security around critical infrastructure such as bridges, power stations, antennas, lakes, and canals, following an explosion in Zubin Potok that damaged the Ibër-Lepenc Canal, which supplies water to several cities and is essential for Kosovo’s energy production.
The blast, which involved around 15 kilograms of explosives, has raised serious concerns about the security of Kosovo’s critical infrastructure. In response, the Kosovo Police and the Kosovo Security Force (FSK) will be deployed to secure key sites. The government is also intensifying both inter-institutional and international cooperation to prevent similar attacks in the future.
“Today, in the early hours, we convened an emergency meeting of the Security Council, led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, after a third attack in the last 72 hours targeting Kosovo’s vital infrastructure—specifically the water supply and electricity production system,” said the Kosovo government in a statement. “Initial indications suggest that this attack was orchestrated by the Serbian state, which has the capacity to carry out such criminal and terrorist actions. These actions are allegedly planned by terrorist organizations and figures such as Milan Radoičić, operating under the direction of the Serbian government.”
The Council also highlighted a troubling link between this attack and similar Russian assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Prime Minister Kurti emphasized that Kosovo is ready and determined to protect its citizens and critical infrastructure. “We will not tolerate actions that destabilize Kosovo and threaten peace and democratic functioning. The situation is under control, and we are working swiftly to restore normalcy,” he added.
Security Measures Implemented:
- Kosovo Police and FSK are securing critical infrastructure.
- Additional steps have been taken to ensure that Kosovo’s water and electricity supply is not compromised.
- International cooperation with neighboring countries, particularly in the energy sector, has been strengthened to prevent any further disruptions.
- Countermeasures against hybrid warfare and disinformation are being actively pursued to protect the integrity of the state and its citizens.
Kosovo’s Commitment to Security:
“The Kosovo government is fully committed to safeguarding the security of its citizens and infrastructure. We urge the international community to condemn this attack, which has caused significant damage. We also call on the public to avoid falling victim to disinformation and misinterpretations related to this hybrid warfare,” said Prime Minister Kurti.
Kosovo authorities continue to ensure that those responsible for these criminal acts will face justice.
