Hamas has agreed in principle to a phased disarmament plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, but the group says Israel must first approve and begin implementing the agreement before it takes further steps.
Ghazi Hamad, a Hamas official involved in the negotiations, told Reuters that the group would proceed with the disarmament process only after both sides formally approve the text of the agreement and Israel begins implementing the first phase.
“The first phase must be implemented by Israel,” Hamad said, adding that Hamas’ commitment depends on reciprocal action from the Israeli side.
Trump’s Peace Board, an organization established to oversee the Gaza ceasefire process, announced that Hamas had accepted a “detailed plan” involving the group’s disarmament and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
However, key elements of the proposed arrangement remain unclear, including the timeline for implementation, security guarantees, and the mechanisms for monitoring compliance.
The reported development comes amid ongoing efforts to establish a framework for a long-term ceasefire and a new security and governance structure in Gaza.
