Kosovo’s Ministry of Digitalization and Public Administration has launched the National Electronic Identity and Digital Wallet Platform.
The initiative has been described as a major step in the country’s digital transformation, enabling citizens and businesses to identify themselves electronically and sign documents digitally using their mobile phones.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said digitalization is changing the way citizens access public services, bringing institutions closer to people without requiring them to appear in person.
According to Kurti, the launch of the National Electronic Identity and Digital Wallet Platform will allow citizens to save time, avoid unnecessary travel and complete administrative procedures from wherever they are, without having to print documents.
Kurti described the platform, together with the electronic signature application “iSign”, as an important step in Kosovo’s digital transformation.
The European Union Ambassador to Kosovo, Dirk Schuebel, said the EU had invested €2.3 million in the platform.
Minister of Digitalization and Public Administration Lulëzon Jagxhiu said the country was taking an important step towards digital transformation.
“In our daily lives, we use our phones to communicate, make payments and carry out many of our activities. However, when we need to prove our identity or sign a document, we often still have to appear in person or obtain paper documents. Today, we are taking an important step towards making these actions possible digitally as well.
“We are launching one of the most important pillars of our state’s digital transformation. Electronic identity is one of the foundations of trust in digital services and transactions,” he said.
