Slovakia has officially expressed its willingness to host potential peace negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. This follows Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement that Slovakia could serve as an “acceptable platform” for dialogue.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated on social media:
“If anyone wants to hold peace talks in Slovakia, we will be ready and extend our welcome.”

The Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that such discussions should include Russia, contrasting with the upcoming summit in Switzerland scheduled for June 2025. Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár described Putin’s remark as a “positive signal” toward ending the war, bloodshed, and destruction.

Fico, known for his close ties with the Kremlin, recently met with Putin in Moscow, a move that drew criticism from Kyiv. Since his return to power, Slovakia has halted military aid to Ukraine and accused Ukraine of jeopardizing its gas supply from Russia through Ukrainian territory.

The issue of gas supply remains crucial, as Ukraine announced it would not renew its gas transit agreement for EU countries via its territory. Slovak authorities claim they have secured gas supplies for 2025 but have threatened countermeasures, including halting electricity exports to Ukraine if necessary.
