Cetinje Massacre: 12 Killed, Including Two Children

In a tragic mass shooting in Cetinje, 12 people were killed, including two children. Four others remain in critical condition at the Clinical Center in Podgorica.

The victims include seven men, three women, and two boys.

The suspect, Aco Martinović, was located by police and Special Unit forces near his family home in the Humci neighborhood. According to Acting Police Director Lazar Šćepanović, Martinović committed suicide by shooting himself in the head shortly before midnight, as police surrounded him.

Timeline of the Incident

Martinović began his rampage at the “Velestovo” tavern near the Sports Center at the entrance to Cetinje. After an argument that escalated into a physical altercation earlier in the day, he left the tavern, only to return armed. He fatally shot four individuals at the tavern.

He then drove to three other locations in Cetinje, including the Humci neighborhood, where he killed or injured more people, including two boys, brothers aged 10 and 13, and several members of his own family.

Police Operations

At around 8 PM, authorities received reports that Martinović was spotted in one of the abandoned halls of the former “Obod” factory. However, a search of the premises yielded no results.

Initial reports indicate that Martinović had been socializing at the “Velestovo” tavern earlier that day with the owner and other acquaintances, celebrating the New Year with food and drinks. The argument and subsequent altercation are believed to have triggered the massacre.

This marks the second mass tragedy in Cetinje in the last two and a half years. On August 12, 2022, Vuk Borilović committed a similar mass shooting in the Medovina neighborhood, killing 10 people, including two boys, also brothers.
