Powerful Earthquake in China, At Least 53 Dead Reported

At least 53 people are reported dead following a powerful earthquake that struck the mountainous Tibet region on Tuesday morning in China.

The earthquake, which hit the holy city of Shigatse in Tibet around 09:00 local time (01:00 GMT), had a magnitude of 7.1 and a depth of 10 kilometers, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which also reported a series of aftershocks in the area, BBC reports, citing RKS NEWS.

The tremors were also felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of India.

Shigatse is considered one of the holiest cities in Tibet.
