The Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) has announced the tender for Phase I of the capital project “Rehabilitation and Modernization of Unit A3 at the ‘Kosovo A’ Power Plant.” This project is considered crucial for advancing energy security and improving the quality of energy supply for the future.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that through this investment, production capacities will increase by over one million MWh.
“Since it began operation in 1970, Unit A3 has never stopped production. Today, we mark the start of an extraordinary project for the Kosovo A Power Plant. This investment aims to increase production capacity. The benefits will be manifold. We are extending the life of Unit A3 by 20 years. We are increasing the capacity to 215 MW. We are improving operational availability by increasing working hours. We are doubling annual production. Unit A3 currently produces about 700 thousand MWh per year, and after rehabilitation, it will produce 1.5 million MWh per year,” said the Prime Minister, as reported by RTK.
Minister of Economy Artane Rizvanolli mentioned that the coming years will be challenging as the power plants will be out of operation for a period.
However, according to her, the results of the rehabilitation process will be positive. “We are making strategic decisions to ensure we have supply security and price affordability. Important steps have been taken in this direction. Today, we are starting the rehabilitation process for Unit A3. All these efforts will allow us to produce by burning less coal and reducing emissions. The coming years will be challenging because the power plants will be offline for a while. Extraordinary work will be required. Once the work is completed, we will be in a different situation,” she added.
Meanwhile, KEK representatives stated that after this investment, the energy future will be more sustainable and secure.
“This project represents KEK’s and the institutions’ commitment to modernizing the country’s energy infrastructure. We aim to increase capacity and improve environmental standards,” said Valdrin Krasniqi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of KEK.
“Modernizing this unit will double its annual production. We are not only investing in energy infrastructure, but we are also working to create a better future for generations to come,” emphasized Bekir Gërguri, CEO of KEK.
