Lawyer Arbër Jashari has strongly reacted to the Serbian government’s decision to provide financial aid to unemployed Serbs in Kosovo. According to Jashari, the 20,000 dinars (approximately 170 euros) for 5,000 unemployed Serbs, announced by Belgrade, could be used as a tool for political influence ahead of Kosovo’s parliamentary elections, scheduled for February 9, 2025.
Jashari argues that this action may be part of Serbia’s strategy to support “Lista Serbska,” a political party that receives open backing from Belgrade but has recently seen a decline in popularity among the Serb community in Kosovo. He believes this move could directly affect the preferences of Serb voters, thus negatively impacting the electoral process.
He stresses that such an attempt by Serbia significantly harms the democratic process in Kosovo, as it undermines the ability of minority communities to freely express their political will without fear of manipulation or external influence. According to Jashari, true democracy can only exist when all citizens are able to vote independently and without outside interference.
