Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-right finance minister, has expressed support for former U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial idea of “cleansing” Gaza by relocating 1.5 million Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan.
Smotrich described the idea as “wonderful,” suggesting that Palestinians could begin new, better lives in other countries after years of living under the threat of terrorism. He added, “Helping them find places to start a better life is a great idea.”
This statement comes shortly after former Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is known for his provocative comments towards Palestinians, also endorsed Trump’s suggestion. Ben-Gvir suggested that the Israeli government should “encourage voluntary immigration” for Palestinians to other countries.
Trump’s remarks on the issue emphasized the devastating conditions in Gaza, calling the region “literally a wreck.” He argued that with the near-total destruction of Gaza, the international community should collaborate with Arab nations to help Palestinians relocate, possibly offering them a chance at peaceful lives elsewhere.
A drastic displacement of this magnitude would directly challenge Palestinian identity and their profound connection to Gaza.
