Mount Etna has once again shown signs of increased volcanic activity, prompting the temporary closure of part of the airspace over Sicily due to volcanic ash, Catania Airport announced.
The ash cloud is drifting southwest of the volcano, leading authorities to impose restrictions on air traffic in the area. Catania Airport said aircraft arrivals had been suspended until 5 p.m.
Passengers have been advised to check the status of their flights directly with their airlines before travelling to the airport.
“Given that the situation is significantly affecting operations, passengers are advised to check their flight status with their airline before heading to the airport,” the airport said in a statement posted on social media.
Authorities are continuing to closely monitor the volcanic activity and weather conditions. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
The duration of the air traffic restrictions remains uncertain, with decisions expected to depend on the movement of the ash cloud and ongoing assessments of airspace safety.
