Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo, Besnik Bislimi, has congratulated Peter Sorensen on his appointment as the European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, succeeding Miroslav Lajčák.
In a message posted on social media platform “X,” Bislimi emphasized the importance of impartiality in the mediation process.
“Congratulations to Peter Sorensen on his appointment as the new EUSR for the dialogue process. We wish him a successful mandate as a facilitator, with a balanced approach to both parties and negotiations as a key prerequisite for a successful process towards the full normalization of relations,” wrote Bislimi.
Sorensen’s Appointment Details
- Danish diplomat Peter Sorensen will officially assume his role on February 1, following the conclusion of Miroslav Lajčák’s mandate on January 31.
- Sorensen’s appointment received final approval from the European Union’s foreign ministers.
- His initial mandate as EUSR will last for 13 months.
Responsibilities of the EUSR
According to the European Council’s announcement, Sorensen’s primary duties will include facilitating the dialogue aimed at achieving comprehensive normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia. He will also focus on overseeing the implementation of the Basic Agreement and its annexes.
The EU Office in Kosovo shared the news, reiterating the critical role of the EUSR in promoting peace and stability through effective dialogue and agreements between the two nations.
