The European Union has agreed to gradually lift sanctions on Syria, several weeks after the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad by rebel forces.
“We reached a political agreement to begin easing sanctions on Syria. This could provide a boost to the Syrian economy and help the country recover,” said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
“The EU will also increase humanitarian aid and recovery efforts,” Kallas added.
“EU foreign ministers agreed on a step-by-step approach, starting with sanctions that are most hindering the country’s reconstruction,” Kallas said, without providing further details.
Syria’s transitional government welcomed the decision, calling it a “positive step.”
Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani expressed hope that the sanctions would eventually be removed permanently.
“We hope that this decision will have a constructive impact on all areas of life for the Syrian people and ensure sustainable development,” he said.
