U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio voiced strong support for Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, stating that Hamas “must absolutely be eradicated.”, reports RFE.

During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Rubio echoed the stance of former President Donald Trump, who has proposed relocating the Palestinian population out of Gaza and placing the enclave under U.S. administration. The plan, which Netanyahu has endorsed, has faced strong opposition from Arab leaders.

“Hamas cannot continue as a military or governing force,” Rubio declared. “As long as it has the capacity to rule, administer, or threaten with violence, peace is impossible.”

The remarks come as the first phase of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas nears its end. A second phase—expected to involve the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners—has yet to be negotiated.

Netanyahu has signaled readiness to resume military operations in Gaza if Hamas does not surrender. The militant group has so far rejected offers to send its leadership into exile.

Meanwhile, Egypt is set to host an Arab summit on February 27, working on a counterproposal that aims to rebuild Gaza without displacing its population. Human rights organizations have condemned the forced relocation of Palestinians as a violation of international law.
