After the exit polls, where the conservative CDU emerged as the winner, the BBC has discussed how today’s elections may have altered the composition of German politics. The large section of pale blue indicates how far AfD has come.
However, this image could still change dramatically.
It is still unclear whether two of the smaller parties will make it into the Bundestag – the populist left-wing BSW and the liberal FDP are currently at 0 seats. But both are very close to the 5% threshold needed to secure seats.
