Following a failed meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which ended in harsh rhetoric and the collapse of a historic rare minerals deal, Friedrich Merz, the future German Chancellor, swiftly expressed his support for Ukraine.

On social media, Merz wrote: “Dear Volodymyr, we stand with Ukraine in good times and in trials. We must never confuse the aggressor and the victim in this terrible war.”

Outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz also showed strong support, stating, “No one desires peace more than the citizens of Ukraine! That’s why we are working together to find a way for a just and lasting peace. Ukraine can count on Germany—and on Europe.”

French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed solidarity with Ukraine, emphasizing that Russia is the aggressor, while Ukraine is the attacked nation.

Meanwhile, the White House denied reports that Zelensky had left after a heated debate with Trump, claiming it was Trump who ordered Zelensky to leave.

The White House’s quick response to this matter raises questions about its significance in the aftermath of the contentious meeting.
