During a meeting with candidates for deputies from the Vlorë region, Albania’s Prime Minister and Socialist Party leader, Edi Rama, discussed the importance of the EU integration process, emphasizing that Albania’s path to EU membership is now a reality, not just a distant prospect.
Rama explained that the current opportunity for EU accession is unprecedented, stating that until recently, EU enlargement was not on the agenda. He pointed out that some critics, especially on social media, fail to understand the complexities of the situation. He highlighted that the delay in Albania’s accession over the past 12 years cannot be solely blamed on Albania, as other countries like Montenegro, Serbia, and North Macedonia have also faced delays despite starting their negotiations years earlier.
The Prime Minister stressed that Albania aims to conclude its negotiations by 2027, urging citizens not to squander this crucial window of opportunity. He reassured the public that the Socialist Party is committed to ensuring the success of these negotiations, with over a thousand experts working tirelessly every day to meet the EU’s requirements. Weekly meetings with the European Union demonstrate the progress being made, with updates on recent accomplishments.
Rama also emphasized the practical benefits of EU membership for citizens, including easier access to health insurance, pensions, and the freedom to live and work across EU member states. He stressed that these tangible benefits should encourage voters to support the EU accession process in the upcoming elections.
In conclusion, Rama called for a focus on the bigger picture: securing Albania’s place within the European Union and the broader community of European nations, urging voters to make their decision with this goal in mind.
