After a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that the world is entering “a turbulent era that will last” and emphasized that “it is good that Serbia has a major ally in Europe, France.”
Vucic told reporters that he discussed geopolitical issues and the situation in Serbia with Macron.
“We discussed a range of issues related to Serbia’s European future, and I asked France to participate in Expo 2027 in Belgrade, and I believe we received a positive response,” said the Serbian leader.
Vucic also remarked that the most challenging issue is the situation in the Republic of Srpska, an entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“I have fought for a compromise solution. I cannot accept that the only solution is the arrest of [the president of the Republic of Srpska, Milorad] Dodik. This is not a solution; it creates problems,” he said, adding that he had presented his ideas for resolving the crisis, though he did not specify what these ideas entail.
Speaking about blockades and protests in Serbia, Vucic revealed that he told Macron that his country has been “facing terror” over the past four months.
Through faculty blockades and ongoing protests, students in Serbia are demanding that the authorities be held accountable for the deaths of 16 people following the collapse of a concrete shelter at the Novi Sad train station.
The student protests have become a symbol of broader dissatisfaction with the rule of law in Serbia, with questions raised about whether the Novi Sad accident was caused by negligence within the system and corruption.
