The Presidency of Syria referred to Kosovo as a “republic” for the first time in an official statement following a meeting between Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani.
According to the announcement, the two leaders met on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum. The statement reads:
“The President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Mr. Ahmad Al-Shara, and His Excellency, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Asaad Al-Shaibani, met with the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Vjosa Osmani, on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.”
This marks a significant shift, as Syria has not recognized Kosovo’s independence until now. The use of the term “Republic” could signal a possible softening of Syria’s stance on Kosovo’s statehood, though no formal recognition has been announced yet.
