Russia has accused Germany of adopting a dangerous position that could lead to a further escalation of the war in Ukraine. Moscow’s reaction came after Friedrich Merz, who is expected to become Germany’s next chancellor in the coming months, left open the possibility of Berlin supplying Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles, Rks News reports.

In an interview with German public broadcaster ARD, Merz was asked whether Germany would provide Ukraine with such weapons.

He responded, “This needs to be achieved jointly. And if there is an agreement, then Germany must take part,” indicating that any such move would depend on coordination with European allies.

In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Merz’s position reflects a “more aggressive stance,” which “will inevitably lead to further escalation of the situation in Ukraine.”

Peskov added: “Unfortunately, it is true that European capitals are not inclined to seek paths toward peace talks, but rather, they seem more focused on further fueling the continuation of the war.”
