The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump are bringing “historical changes” that are forcing the European Union to “play a very active role” in shaping a new world order.
“The West, as we have known it so far, no longer exists,” she said in an interview with the German newspaper Die Zeit.
Although, as she emphasized, she has always been a “devout Atlanticist” and a “great friend of the U.S.,” the current crisis between the American administration and Europe, combined with broader geopolitical challenges, calls for decisive steps from the EU.
“What we once considered the world order is now turning into global chaos, driven, among other things, by the struggle for dominance between China and the U.S., but certainly also by Vladimir Putin’s imperial ambitions,” she said.
“For this reason, we need a new European Union, different and ready to step onto the global stage and actively participate in shaping the emerging new world order,” emphasized von der Leyen.
