As Kosovo’s parliament remains stuck in deadlock, Vetëvendosje (VV) MP Donika Gërvalla has voiced hope that the institutional stalemate will be broken today, while remaining ambiguous about a potential deal with NISMA to secure the votes needed to elect the Speaker of the Assembly.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the next session of the Assembly, Gërvalla reiterated that the Speaker’s seat rightfully belongs to the election-winning coalition — Vetëvendosje, Guxo, and Alternativa.

“You know that the Speakership belongs to the winning coalition. I hope today we’ll unblock the situation in the Assembly and that opposition parties will respect democratic norms and vote for the Speaker, who must come from the coalition that won the elections,” Gërvalla stated.

Cryptic Answer on NISMA Cooperation

Asked directly whether VV and NISMA have reached a formal agreement to break the impasse, Gërvalla declined to confirm or deny:

“When we enter the chamber, you’ll see the result. The hallway is not the place to discuss these matters. You’ll see whether we move forward today or continue with the same kind of blockage,” she said.

Her carefully chosen words have fueled speculation that a last-minute parliamentary deal may be in play, especially after NISMA withheld support in the previous vote.

Plea to End the Deadlock

Gërvalla stressed that the current blockage has no justifiable grounds now that elections are over and mandates verified:

“It’s the most normal thing to do after winning an election and clearing a blockade. I see no reason for further blocking of the Assembly,” she added.

The Assembly is set to reconvene later today. All eyes are on the voting outcome — which will either signal a breakthrough or push Kosovo deeper into parliamentary paralysis.
