Dmitry Medvedev, a senior Russian security official, commented today on the agreement between Ukraine and the United States concerning rare minerals, stating that US President Donald Trump has forced Kyiv to pay for future US military aid.

The agreement, signed in Washington, grants the United States access to new Ukrainian contracts for minerals and will finance investments for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

According to Kiev Post, citing diplomatic sources, the Trump administration also informed Congress yesterday about the intention to approve the export of defense-related products to Ukraine, worth 50 million dollars or more, marking the first such step since Trump’s return to the White House.

“Trump broke the Kyiv regime to the point where they will have to pay for American assistance with mineral resources,” Medvedev wrote, who is now the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, on Telegram.

He further added, “Now they (the Ukrainians) will have to pay for military supplies with the national wealth of a country that is disappearing.”

Medvedev, who served as President from 2008 to 2012, once cultivated an image as a liberal pro-Western modernizer, but since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he has become one of the most outspoken anti-Western hawks, according to Reuters.
