The European Parliament’s rapporteur for the Western Balkans and Serbia, Tonino Picula, has commented on the recent political developments in the region, including Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s visit to Moscow.

Picula stated that this visit occurred at a time when it should not have, adding that Serbia is not among the countries progressing toward European Union membership.

“The visit to Moscow by Vučić is not a secondary event; it happened at a time when it should not have. While some countries are advancing in the EU enlargement process, unfortunately, Serbia is not among them,” Picula remarked.

Commenting on European Council President Antonio Costa’s visit to Belgrade, Picula appreciated that Costa began his regional tour in Serbia, emphasizing that “there are many issues that need to be discussed.”

He noted that the Moscow parade was not only a commemoration of the victory over fascism but also served to demonstrate the continued support that Russian President Vladimir Putin enjoys from certain world leaders.

Picula concluded by highlighting that Vučić’s exposure to criticism from Brussels is “clearer than ever.”
