U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson has called on Serbia to end its dependence on Russian energy, distance itself from Moscow, Beijing, and Tehran, and fully align its foreign policy with Western institutions.
In an interview, Wilson said Serbia should pursue membership in the European Union and NATO but stressed that such a path requires a clear break from authoritarian regimes.
“I am concerned about the excessive influence of war criminal Putin in Serbia. Belgrade should be part of the modern Western civilization,” Wilson said.
The Republican congressman argued that the international community must continue opposing Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and insisted that cutting off financial support to Moscow is one of the most effective ways to do so.
“The way to stop this is to stop financing war criminal Putin,” Wilson stated.
Wilson added that the issue extends beyond Serbia, pointing to other countries that continue purchasing Russian energy, including India. He welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to encourage New Delhi to reduce its imports of Russian energy.
“Serbia should not negotiate. Serbia should simply do it, because it is the right thing to do in order to promote freedom and democracy around the world,” Wilson concluded.
