Clashes erupt as hundreds protest Israel’s participation in Eurovision Song Contest, leading to injuries and disruption.

Around 700 to 800 protesters gathered in Basel on Saturday to voice opposition against Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. The demonstration escalated into violent clashes, resulting in three police officers being injured.

Tensions rose when two men displayed Israeli flags, prompting some protesters to attempt to seize them. Police intervened to remove the men, which led to confrontations lasting approximately 45 minutes. Authorities then blocked protesters’ advance toward the official Eurovision viewing area, using rubber bullets to halt the crowd.

Protesters responded by throwing fireworks at law enforcement, causing injuries to three officers who were subsequently hospitalized. One protester also required medical attention on site. The violent exchanges disrupted tram services in Basel’s city center for about an hour.
