Acting Prime Minister and Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti revealed that his offer for a governing coalition with the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) was met with a “rather harsh” rejection, yet he continues to push for collaboration, describing it as the “ideal coalition.”

Kurti said the offer followed LDK’s own call for a political—not procedural—solution to break the post-election deadlock, prompting him to extend a formal invitation for power-sharing, which LDK rejected. Speaking to RTK, he reiterated that LDK remains his preferred partner in a potential government.

Despite the initial refusal, Kurti renewed his call for unity, suggesting a tripartite coalition including Vetëvendosje, LDK, and Nisma Socialdemokrate. Such a setup, he argued, would provide the 80-seat supermajority needed to pass international agreements that previously failed in parliament.

The main sticking point remains the position of Speaker of Parliament, which Kurti insists should go to Albulena Haxhiu, the most voted woman candidate with over 125,000 votes. He rejected the idea of giving the post to Nisma, which has only three MPs, especially when Vetëvendosje is in negotiations with parties holding significantly more mandates.

Kurti confirmed ongoing talks with Nisma’s leader, Fatmir Limaj, whom he praised for returning to parliament and helping AAK surpass the electoral threshold. He expressed willingness to include Nisma in government via ministerial posts, but dismissed Limaj’s demand for the Speaker role as a deal-breaker.

On LDK’s proposal for a transitional or inclusive government, Kurti laughed off the idea, arguing that Kosovo must maintain a functioning opposition, particularly leaving PDK in opposition for at least one more term after 20 years in power.

Kurti also defended his push for a secret ballot for the Speaker election, saying it would free opposition MPs from internal party pressure and allow them to vote according to their conscience. He emphasized that convening the new legislature should not be held hostage to opposition obstructionism, regardless of who forms the government.
