The General Council of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) has issued a strong political declaration condemning what it calls the institutional degradation caused by the ruling Vetëvendosje (VV) Movement. The party accuses VV of deliberately paralyzing Kosovo’s democratic institutions and turning them into propaganda tools for a single political agenda.
“The Government and the Assembly are practically blocked and have become instruments of a single party. Institutions belong to the citizens, not to a party—they must serve democracy and the people,” the statement reads.
AAK alleges that VV is purposefully undermining democratic governance, reducing Kosovo to a “captured state” under the will of one man and one party. The party accuses the government of replacing national dialogue and consensus with political arrogance, hostility toward dissent, and pressure on the media.
Furthermore, AAK argues that the caretaker government no longer represents the will of the citizens, and is exploiting its remaining time in power to pursue narrow partisan interests, including misuse of public funds.
“The Assembly has been left to the mercy of VV’s political calculations, with no accountability or institutional responsibility.”
AAK warns that the current dysfunction is a serious threat to democracy and Kosovo’s future, pledging to remain a strong voice for the citizens and to fight to restore institutional integrity and legal order.
In addition, AAK criticized the government’s foreign policy failures, particularly its confrontational approach, which it claims is damaging Kosovo’s international standing and hindering Euro-Atlantic integration.
Against Simultaneous Local and National Elections
AAK also rejected VV’s proposal to hold local and national elections simultaneously, calling it a power grab designed to avoid accountability and consolidate control over all institutions.
“This clearly shows their intention to seize full institutional power and to suppress the democratic will of the voters.”
A Call for Unity
In its closing message, AAK calls on all opposition parties, civil society, and citizens to unite in defense of Kosovo’s fragile democracy.
“Now is the time to speak up clearly and decisively. Kosovo deserves institutions that work for its people, not for a single party that for five years has sabotaged constitutional order, distorted democratic practices, and damaged our credibility with EU and U.S. partners.”
