Gazmend Muhaxheri, Deputy Chairman of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), has responded to Memli Krasniqi, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), who asserted that if the LDK provided its 19 votes, he could form a new majority and government.
Muhaxheri stated that even if PDK, LDK, and AAK were to unite, they still could not reach the 61 votes required, writing for Reporteri.net. He emphasized that they are three votes short.
Numbers Don’t Add Up for Opposition Coalition
“As the opposition, with PDK, with the Alliance, with everyone, we don’t have 61 votes… I am replying to both Memli and the public opinion: the numbers aren’t there. Emilia Rexhepi says she won’t form a coalition with us, Elbert Krasniqi says he only forms a coalition with Albin, and we have one of our own deputies who won’t vote for a coalition with PDK. Meaning, we are three votes short, we can’t form a government. It cannot be done,” Muhaxheri declared.
According to Muhaxheri, even if these parties joined forces, they would remain at around 59 votes. “Even Albin says he has the votes but can’t form it. It’s one thing to say, another to do. You are three votes short, you remain at 59,” Muhaxheri told Klan Kosova.
Krasniqi had previously stated that forming a parliamentary majority to enable the constitution of the Kosovo Assembly was very simple. According to him, only the 19 votes of the LDK were needed, and he would secure the rest to reach 61. “The math is very simple, with just 19 votes from the LDK, I’ll get the others, and we become 61. You know the math, I know it, everyone knows it; there are deputies here in Kosovo, without the Serb List, where the former opposition parties can make 61,” Krasniqi declared after the 31st failed attempt to constitute the Assembly.
According to Krasniqi, the responsibility for breaking the deadlock that has paralyzed the institutional process lies with the LDK deputies. “We are ready to form the majority with the 19 votes of the LDK. Kosovo needs stability, for institutions to function, and for decision-making to return to normalcy,” Krasniqi stated.
Meanwhile, today marked the 33rd failed attempt to constitute the Assembly. The next attempt is scheduled for Thursday.
