The U.S. Embassy in Prishtina has stated that the recent decision by the Constitutional Court of Kosovo regarding the Assembly’s deadlock underscores the importance of constitutional processes.
In a response to Gazeta Express, a U.S. Embassy spokesperson emphasized that it is now the responsibility of political party leaders to finalize the constitution of the Assembly and form a new, stable government in accordance with the Constitution.
“It is the responsibility of political leaders to constitute the Assembly and create a stable government in accordance with the Constitution,” the spokesperson told Express.
The spokesperson added that the U.S. has long supported Kosovo’s democratic development and eagerly anticipates working with the new government to advance regional stability, security, and prosperity.
The Constitutional Court of Kosovo on Thursday issued a ruling obliging political parties to respect the spirit of the Constitution by providing the country with new institutions within a 30-day timeframe. The Court specified that the right granted to the largest party from the elections to nominate the candidate for Assembly Speaker should not be used to block the processes. It also called on parties to participate in the vote.
Political parties have reacted to the decision, and today’s constitutive session—the first since the Constitutional Court’s ruling—is highly anticipated to see how it will proceed.
