Kosovo Police, fulfilling their duty to maintain security, have been controlling the Serbs arriving at Gazimestan for the upcoming Vidovdan commemoration event.
They stopped a Serb who was carrying a plastic gun. After verifying it was not a real weapon, he was allowed to proceed to the event area.
However, another Serb was found carrying a Serbian flag during a police check and was not permitted to enter.
Among the attendees was also Deputy Slavko Simić, who joined hundreds of citizens to participate in the Vidovdan celebration at Gazimestan.
Last year on June 10, the Municipality of Gračanica had decided to mark the holiday with Serbian state symbols and flags. However, the Basic Court in Pristina overturned this decision on June 12, ruling that no Serbian symbols or flags are allowed during the Vidovdan celebration.
The court justified its ruling by stating that such a decision could provoke interethnic tensions, especially if it is perceived that local authorities favor one community in violation of legal order.
“This risk to public order is even higher in the context where the symbol of another state is displayed in an organized manner by a municipal public authority without the consent or authorization of central institutions,” the Basic Court of Pristina’s ruling explained.
