Former leader of the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina, Nenad Čanak, has raised serious accusations against Serbia’s security services, claiming they have broken into his apartment and taken personal belongings a tactic he says mirrors what he experienced in the 1990s.

Speaking to reporters, Čanak said that threats have also been directed at his son, Milan, and held Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić personally responsible for any harm that might come to him or his family.

“I was looking forward to retirement, but clearly, they won’t give me peace. And if they wanted to drag me back from retirement, they succeeded,” Čanak stated.

He stressed that his family is off-limits and warned the authorities not to cross that “red line.”

“I know exactly who I’m dealing with because I fought against them in the 1990s. But I tell them now — this time, the fight will end badly for the regime,” he warned.

Earlier this year, Čanak had publicly claimed that the regime was laying the groundwork for his elimination. He noted that his son was first targeted by TV Informer, led by Dragan Vučićević, followed by attacks from Vučić himself. Furthermore, in January 2025, after 20 years of protection, his police security detail was revoked.

The allegations by Čanak add to growing concerns about political repression and the targeting of dissenting voices in Serbia under Vučić’s rule.
